Local lawn care

Hutto’s Veteran-Owned Lawn Care Team

Hutto is where Troops Mowing calls home. The shop is here, co-owner Dylan lives here, and every street in 78634 is inside our service area — no “we’ll see if we can fit you in.” We’ve serviced yards all over Mustang Creek and Cottonwood Creek, and if you know Hutto, you know the Hippo is basically a fifth branch of the military around here.

Hutto’s soil doesn’t mess around: alkaline clay over a limestone base, and mostly Bermuda grass territory, with some St. Augustine lawns holding their ground too. Our mowing crews, weed & feed program and cleanup division are all built around what that combination actually does through a Central Texas year — the July heat, the winter dormancy, and the weeds that show up in between.

What Hutto Lawns Are Up Against

Alkaline clay over limestone

Most Hutto lawns sit on heavy blackland clay over a limestone base. It holds water after a storm, then bakes hard and cracks in a dry July. That’s why weed & feed here is a program, not a one-off: pre-emergent has to be down before soil temperatures climb past 55°F, and fertilizer has to be timed so the grass — not the weeds — takes advantage of whatever rain comes.

Bermuda country, with St. Augustine holding on

Hutto is mostly Bermuda grass, with St. Augustine lawns in the mix, especially in shadier yards. Bermuda wants full sun and a sharp, regular cut; St. Augustine is the one that shows chinch bug damage first in a hot summer — yellow, crispy patches that look like drought but often aren’t. Knowing which one you have changes how we mow it and how we treat it.

Builder beds and HOA standards

Much of Hutto is newer construction, and the developers planted whatever was cheapest — generic plants that are often already dead, low-quality mulch, and an HOA letter waiting for whoever lets it slide. Our flower bed cleanup crew replaces the dead stock, redefines the edge, and puts down fresh mulch or gravel so the beds finally match the lawn.

Timing matters

Getting the Timing Right in Hutto

Watering restrictions in July & August

When July and August hit and watering restrictions kick in, Hutto lawns take on real heat stress from all that sun and not enough water. Chinch bugs hit at the same time. We keep the blades sharp, don’t scalp a stressed lawn, and tell you when a brown patch looks like bugs rather than thirst.

Winter isn’t the off-season

December through February your Bermuda clocks out for dormancy. We don’t. Winter weeds like burweed and poa annua keep growing in dormant turf — which is what the September pre-emergent is for — and the crews shift to bush trimming, weed removal, leaf cleanups and paver walkway installs, the one project we only do in the cool months.

Excellent service and professionalism! I’ve been using Troops Mowing for my regular mowing and weed control, and they’ve consistently done a fantastic job. Recently, I also had them quote and complete a cleanup of my flower bed — the results were amazing! The team was very professional, kept me updated throughout the job, and took extra care with the details. The biggest improvement was in the white pebble area where weeds had grown in between the stones — they cleaned it up thoroughly and made it look brand new. They also refreshed the mulch around my trees, which tied everything together beautifully. Highly recommend their services for anyone looking for reliable, professional, and quality lawn care and landscaping work!

Had pavers done for the pathway from the yard door leading upto our back yard and also carved out a corner of my backyard to make a play area with rubber mulch for my son - my son loves walking on them, and they pavers looks so good! The folks were very professional and communicative every step of the way. Very reasonably priced too. Seriously amazing job - they would be my go-to for any yard work!
